That Carey BGS should run Unit 3/4 National Politics as a subject in 2011

It has been announced by the Senior Management Team at Carey Baptist Grammar School that the subject of Unit 3/4 (Year 12) National Politics will not be running in 2011.

We believe that school should not circum to financial pressure and instead focus on upholding its high academic and educational standards by keeping this subject running in 2011.

We believe this for the following reasons:

1. Denying at least 8 students the right to do the subject in Year 12 is comprimising education principles of the school for financial gain.

2. Parents who send their children to Carey EXPECT their to be able to partake in any subject on offer by the school.

3. The right of students subject decision should be upheld over financial pressures experienced by the school.

4. A school is NOT a business. Not allowing students to participate in this subject is not allowing them the right to pursue their strong political passions at school.

5. Year 12, the final year of school, is a year in which life decisions and choices are made. Denying students the right to do this subject will force them to pursue a subject that they do not want to do, inhibiting this important decision-making process.

6. A school which can spend hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of advertisments in high-circulation weekend papers such as The Age should not be prioritising self-promotion of its brand over its values and ethos of high academic standards.

This petition will be delivered to the Principal, Mr Grutzner; Head of Senior School Mr Brown; and others members of the Senior Management Team if needed.
